History of Emerald
Ancient Egypt and Mediterranean have been using emeralds for ornamental purposes. It was used to be mined only in Egypt. Egypt was the only source of green emerald stone. The era was Skiat and also 15 killometers from the valley. Emerald is a green precious stone and people were aware of the value. Ellite class used to use it for themselves. Its first mining was started in 4th through mid - 1st centuries BC.
Emerald gemstones traces are found in Austria also during Roman period. Although, there is no clear evidence about its finding there. Many geological and geographical researchers have witnessed the existence of emeralds in Ancient Egypt. Traces are also observed in Austria during the Roman Period though there is no any decisive evidence about it. Egypt used to build buildings, pyramids, used to decorate statues with stones, vessels and stone jewelry. A century ago, 100 years ago, emerald mines were rediscovered in Upper Egypt which was named as Cleopatra’s mines for her love of the stone. Precious green emerald stone has been a mark of fascination for ancient civilizations and cultures over 6000 years ago. Emerald reached to Babylon around 4000 BC where it was marketed. This green stone was symbol of eternal life for ancient Egyptians.
